"Naming Liberty" by Jane Yolen
This book was about 2 different stories: one about a little girl who immigrates into America and Fredric Auguste Bartholdi. It is interesting becomes at the end it brings them both together.
I would use this book to teach students about immigration and why people want to come to America.I wold have kids color statues of Liberty through their own eyes.

"Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt" by Deborah Hopkinson
This was one of my favorite books when I was a kid. I was always fascinated with the underground railroad and this is a great example of historical fiction. Clara a slave girl sews a quilt showing the way to freedom.
I would use this book to teach students about the underground railroad. I might would have them create their own quilt square and make a "quilt" out of paper for the class on the wall.

"Prairie Train" by Marsha Wilson Chall
I loved this book!! I love trains so this one definitely made me smile. t is about a young girl journey on a train to visit her grandmother in St Louis. I really enjoyed the descriptive words the author uses to describe the train.
I would use this book to teach students about trains. You could have students pick out words from the book that are descriptive and explain why.

"Jazz" by Walter Dean Myers
This would be a good book for a music teacher. It is several short-stories/poems about the Jazz era that talk about jazz in them. The Harlem renaissance is also prevalent.
You could use this book to have students point out anything that makes a sounds then try and play the actual short story on an instrument.

"A Very Important Day"by Maggie Rugg Herold
This book is a book about coming to America and immigration of many different people into America. I like this book because everyone also loved the snow that fell the day they recieved their citizenship.
I would use this book to help students understand immigration and the importance of freedom. I might would also talk about the diversity of the characters.
