"Violet's Music" by Angela Johnson
this was DEFINITELY a book about diversity. Violet didn't really fit in until her music brought everyone together and they all were of different ethnicities.
I would use this book to talk about rhythm and music in the classroom.

"The Hanukkah Hop" by Erica Silverman
This book is about a Hanukkah party and all the sounds that happen at the party.
I think you could use this book in the classroom to show students the ideas and traditions of Hanukkah.

"Henry's Freedom Box: A True Story from the Underground Railroad" by Ellen Levine
I adored the story in this book. It is about a runaway slave that mailed himself to freedom in a box and he made it!!
I would definitely use this book to talk about history and slavery. You could talk about what is must have been like to travel the Underground Railroad.

"The Secret Garden" by Frances Hodgson Burnett
This is one of my favorite stories of all time. I chose this book for diversity because of the handicap boy Colin. Colin over comes his anger and becomes just one of the kids through the Secret garden.
I think you could do a lesson about accepting people with disability. Talk with the children about what they would plant in their garden.

"Coolies" by Yin
This was a story based in the building of the railroad. It is about two brothers, Shek and Little Wong, who travel to America to work on the railroad.
You could use this book to talk about the culture of China and how it differs from ours in America.
